Forging Parts

Forged Spline Shafts

Forged splined shafts that transmit torque through a form-fit spline, finish-machined and heat-treated to specification.

Forging weight0.5 – 25 kg per part, per die set
Tolerance±1.5 mm as-forged; finished to ±0.05 mm after machining
Heat treatmentQuench and temper, normalising or annealing — to specification
Forged steel spline shafts with machined external splines
About this part

What it is and why it is made that way

A spline shaft transfers torque through the form of the teeth rather than through friction, so it will not slip under shock load. The shaft is forged for grain flow and internal strength, then the splines are cut, the ends are machined, and the heat treatment is applied to suit the wear and load the drawing calls for.

  • Splines cut after forging, not rolled
  • Heat treated for wear resistance or core strength, to specification
  • Shoulder and bearing journals finish-ground
  • Dynamic balancing available on request

Materials

  • C45 / 40Cr carbon steel
  • 42CrMo alloy steel
  • 20CrMnTi / 20CrMnMo gear steel
  • Stainless 304 / 17-4PH
  • Alloy steel 40CrNiMoA

Production processes

  • Open-die forging
  • Closed-die forging
  • Hot and cold forging
  • Heat treatment
  • CNC finish machining

Typical applications

  • Torque transmission shafts
  • Machine tool spindles
  • Gearbox input shafts
  • Heavy drive shafts
